2021 Preparedness - Dual Focus: Week 23

Week 23: Cheese

Diets rich in milk and other dairy products help build and maintain bone mass, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, build teeth, and help maintain a healthy blood pressure. Add 2 pounds of cheese to your General Store this week. Decide which cheeses you use most often. You may choose to store waxed cheese, wax your own cheese, or freeze your cheese. Frozen

cheese will crumble when defrosted but works great for topping casseroles or spaghetti, garnishing tacos or onion soup, macaroni and cheese, and even grilled cheese sandwiches.

Week 23: Medications

It’s time to consider how you will care for your medical needs beyond just the first aid kit. Look through your medicine cabinet and take an inventory of those items you have which may be almost empty and need to be replenished. Next ask yourself what is missing. Did you use up all the Pepto last time everyone had the flu?

When thinking about medications there are a few things to consider.

1. When possible purchase the pill form. Pills last two years or more past the expiration dates, liquids do not.

2. Consider those who may need to evacuate to your home. If they have small children you may want to store a small amount of child’s dosage medications.

3. When there is a disaster near your home, earthquake, wild fire, tornado, flood, hurricane, etc. those evacuating will hit the stores in your town and leave the shelves bare of basic medications for headache, stomach upset and more.

4. Again, pain meds will be very valuable as an item to barter with those who have not prepared.
