July 15 week 28
Monday:
Make fire starters. When you need to start a fire to cook, in a fireplace for heat, or when the power is out it can be frustrating, waste matches and, reduce the life of a lighter. Ensure your fire will take off and burn long enough to ignite tinder, then kindling, and then logs. Visit the Totally Ready blog for directions.
Tuesday:
Purchase items needed to teach/learn the new skill you have chosen to work on. If you are learning to sew purchase basic supplies for all family members. If you are learning to work on a car purchase any needed tools and work gloves for all family members. What do you need if you are learning to make cheese or dip candles? You get the idea.
Wednesday:
Make up a set of all keys, home, car, boat, office, safety deposit box, etc. for all adult Five Day kits. We all have extra keys, but you may realize you need to have a few duplicates made.
Thursday:
Build a shelter. If you have a tent you may use that for sleeping but practice building a lean-to using tarps or branches and rope or plastic sheeting or whatever you have on hand. If you are evacuated or living on your property to protect a damaged home, you will need more than a tent. Create shade using tarps, blankets, again whatever you have on hand. If you are sorting through a household gutted by flooding or storms you will want shade to rest under and to work under.
Friday:
Camp at home using the structures you created yesterday. Disasters do not care if it is 100 degrees, raining, or snowing when they strike. Cook outdoors and use the house only for bathroom breaks. Take time to tell family stories and play games. During a disaster TV, phones, and, computers will not be available as distractions.
Saturday:
Evaluate what you learned from camping out, cooking off the grid, and entertaining family yesterday, and, make a list of items to purchase.
Remember the skill you chose to learn? Today is the day to work on that skill. If you did not choose one, decide on one today based on your experience camping.
